Erin Paré Sponsors the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act”
RALEIGH - Representative Erin Paré (R-Wake) is a primary sponsor of the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act”, which was introduced in the NC House on April 5, 2023. The bill will ensure that girls’ rights under Title IX are upheld in athletic competition. HB 574 prohibits biological males from playing on girls’ sports teams and applies to public schools, other schools which are part of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, or schools that play those teams.
“This legislation will hold up Title IX rights afforded to girls, to protect their rights to compete on a level playing field. Allowing boys to play on girls’ teams reverses nearly 50 years of advances for women,” said Paré. “A recent statewide poll shows 70% of North Carolinians agree, biological males should not be allowed on female teams - - this is a unifying issue.”
In 2022 a transgender female (biological male) injured a female volleyball player in Cherokee, North Carolina after spiking a ball into the girl’s face. The female player suffered neck and head injuries, vision problems, and still has long-term concussion effects. If passed, North Carolina would join 18 other states with similar laws protecting female athletes from being forced to compete against biological males.
Paré continued, “As a mother of two teenage athletes, one being a girl, I see my daughter’s sacrifices and commitment to her sport, and I want to protect her and other girls in this state to assure females are safe, and not benched in their own sports.”
